Several sitcoms focusing on large families growing up in common America aired during the twentieth century. Eight Is Enough was one of the most popular. It was based on Tom Braden, a syndicated newspaper columnist, and followed the life of the Bradford family. Eight is Enough aired for five seasons, from March 15, 1977, to May 23, 1981, and launched the careers of several young performers, including Grant Goodeve, Willie Aames, and Ralph Macchio. Find out what happened to the Bradfords all these years later.

Mark Hamill Almost Appeared In The Show
Because of his role as Luke Skywalker in George Lucas’ epic Star Wars film franchise, Mark Hamill is a huge Hollywood star. But, as previously stated, Hamill was cast in the part of David Bradford on Eight is Enough! before he appeared on the big screen wielding a lightsaber. He even secured a five-year contract after filming the show’s pilot. He wasn’t a fan of the show, to begin with, and then he was involved in a vehicle accident the night the pilot aired. Despite the fact that Eight is Enough was a rating success, the show was later terminated due to low viewership. Surprisingly, one of the show’s major stars only learned of the cancellation after reading about it in the press! Dick Van Patten learned of the news in the same way that supporters at home did: by reading it in the newspaper. The shenanigans of some of Van Patten’s younger co-stars, according to the New York Times, also contributed to the show’s cancellation.
The Show’s Inspiration
Although it may seem hard to believe, Eight is Enough is based on the life of Tom Braden, a syndicated newspaper columnist. In 1975, he wrote his autobiography, Eight Is Enough: A Father’s Memoir of Life with His Extra-Large Family. Braden’s life was certainly fascinating. He was also a former British Army combat soldier, an American CIA employee, and later a co-host of the CNN show Crossfire. In 2009, he passed away.

Madeleine Stowe Before
